Colonel John M. Groves is the Chief of Staff, Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF) South, Key West, Florida. JIATF South is a national task force that executes detection and monitoring of illicit traffickers in direct support of international and interagency law enforcement interdiction operations. JIATF South operations support U.S. national security and international regional stability.
Colonel Groves graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He earned a Master of Science from Georgia Tech in 2007, also in Mechanical Engineering.
Colonel Groves is a Command Pilot with over 1900 hours in the UH-1N, MH-53, and CV-22 aircraft. He has an extensive background in joint special operations and personnel recovery, including combat experience in Iraq, Kuwait, Djibouti, Pakistan, and Afghanistan in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He also served as Deputy Director of Exercises and Joint Special Operations Air Component Director for the Aviation Testing and Evaluation Group (AVTEG), and as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA and the Air War College in Montgomery, AL. He has commanded at the squadron and group level and most recently commanded the 336 Training Group (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) at Fairchild Air Force Base, WA. He also served as the Chief of the Office of Security Cooperation at the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
He and his wife, Stephanie, have one child, Brennan.
