Vice Director, Joint Interagency Task Force South

Mr. Brett A. Chianella assumed the duties of Vice Director for Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF) South in September of 2016.

Mr. Chianella entered the FBI as a Special Agent and was assigned to the Miami Field Office where he investigated counterterrorism as a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF).  During his tenure in Miami, he served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.

Mr. Chianella was transferred to the Tampa Field Office where he was assigned to the Domestic Terrorism Special Events Squad and served as the Maritime and Aviation Liaison Agent and Crisis Management Coordinator to several National Special Security Events.  Mr. Chianella was re-assigned to Operation Panama Express North Strike Force where he investigated Consolidated Priority Organization Targets in the Western Hampshire.  During his assignment in Tampa, Mr. Chianella also served on SWAT as the maritime coordinator with several operational assignments overseas. 

Mr. Chianella was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent and assigned to FBI Headquarters in Washington D.C., Criminal Investigative Division, Transnational Organized Crime, Western Hampshire (TOC-W).  In this position, Mr. Chianella served as program manager of the Southwest Region and Operation Panama Express coordinating the efforts of 12 field offices in the fight against organized crime.  Mr. Chianella also served as the national program manager of the FBI’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), that provides program oversight for all FBI OCDETF investigations.

Mr. Chianella departed FBI Headquarters and was promoted to Unit Chief, TOC-W and assigned to the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), as the Senior FBI Liaison and in 2016 was appointed the Vice Director of JIATF-S.   

Mr. Chianella started his law enforcement career in central Florida in 1992 as a Deputy Sherriff and then as a state law enforcement officer, holding the ranks of sergeant and lieutenant with Florida Alcohol Beverages and Tobacco.  Mr. Chianella entered federal law enforcement service in 2002.  He also is an active reservist in the United States Coast Guard with operational deployments in IRAQI FREEDOM and NEW DAWN.

Mr. Chianella has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Florida Metropolitan University.
